An evening of the classics with “Janus,” featuring Laura Campbell (flute), Erica Howard (oboe), Richard MacDowell (clarinet), and William Cowdery (piano). Music includes Caprice by Saint-Saëns, a world premiere from Tim Schirmer, and more.

Following the tradition of the Musicians’ Choice Chamber Music Series, oral program notes will be given by the musicians, interspersed throughout the performance. The short format program is presented in an intimate, relaxed setting without intermission.

Featured Composer

Timothy Schirmer, composer​
A native of East St. Louis, Illinois, Tim Schirmer received a B.A. in music theory from St. Louis University and both the M/Mus. and D.M.A. in composition from the University of Illinois/Urbana-Champaign.

He has composed extensively for the theatre; including 10 musicals and underscore for more than 50 plays with longtime friend and collaborator/director Randi Jennifer Collins.

Additionally he composed incidental music and songs for more than 30 productions by the Tony-nominated American Players Theatre in Spring Green, WI where he was composer-in-residence and music director. While at APT he founded the Festival Chamber Players and presented concerts of Baroque and 20th century music for several seasons.

The three scores written for The Great American People Show at New Salem State Park in Petersburg, IL. were performed every season for 19 years and heard by more than 130,000 patrons.

His concert works have been performed at a variety of venues throughout the midwest and New York City, including performances presented by Concrete Timbre and Vox Novus.

Compositions for film/video include a score for the award-winning PBS documentary The Greatest Lakes.

He is delighted to have re-connected with Laura Campbell for whom he has written this work.

Meet the Musicians

​Laura Campbell, flute
Laura Campbell is the Teacher of Flute at Colgate University and Principal Flutist of the Colgate Symphony Orchestra. She is also Second Flutist in the Orchestra of the Southern Finger Lakes. She had been the Director of Instrumental Music at Wells College since 1998.

  • Ms. Campbell has performed with the Springfield Symphony (Illinois), St. Louis Municipal Opera Orchestra, Ithaca Opera Orchestra, St. Louis Gateway Festival Orchestra, Utica Symphony, Catskill Symphony, MostArts Festival Orchestra in Alfred, NY, Northwest Plaza Pops Orchestra (St. Louis), and several other orchestras. She toured Latin America on a U.S. State Department Good Will Tour, performing in six countries as a member of the University of Illinois Wind Ensemble, and toured France and Switzerland with the Central New York Orchestra.

    Ms. Campbell’s teachers have included: Alexander Murray (Principal Flutist of the London Symphony), Kenton Terry (Second Flutist of the Philadelphia Orchestra), Robert Dick - (contemporary flutist and composer, New York City), and Janet Scott (St. Louis Symphony).

    She can be heard on several CDs that are available and streamed on iTunes, Amazon, Spotify, and Discogs: “Morning Light” music for flute and harp; “Elemental Forces” (Deep Winter) by Mark Volker; “Baroque Music for Guitar” Karl Wolf- guitarist; “Classical Music for Guitar” Karl Wolf; and on Innova (The label of the American Composers Forum) - “Society for New Music: Pinocchio / Beauty and the Beast,” American Composers Alliance: “Windrider: Final Ascent” by Margaret Fairlie Kennedy, and several others.

Erica Howard, oboe
Erica Howard is a visiting lecturer at Cornell University. Prior to coming to Ithaca, they lived in Birmingham, Alabama where they played English horn with the Alabama Symphony and taught at the Alabama School of Fine Arts. Erica is also the Principal Oboe of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra (Georgia), with whom they have also been featured as a soloist on several occasions, and former Principal Oboe of the Atlanta Ballet.

Richard MacDowell, clarinet
Clarinetist Richard MacDowell has taught and performed widely across the United States and abroad. He currently serves on the faculties of Mansfield State, Colgate, and Binghamton Universities and remains active as a soloist, chamber musician, orchestral performer, and clinician. MacDowell studied and earned degrees from the Eastman School of Music, the New England Conservatory, Northwestern University, and Florida State University, studying with Robert Marcellus, Stanley Hasty, Leon Russianoff, and Fred Ormand. A leading pedagogue in the Marcellus and Hasty traditions, he recently retired after 21 years as clarinet professor at the University of Texas at Austin and previously taught at Interlochen Arts Academy.

William Cowdery, piano
William Cowdery is musical director and organist of the First Congregational Church, Ithaca. Bill served for three years as director of Cornell University's Sage Chapel Choir. He has been a guest conductor of the Elmira Cantata Singers and the Colgate University Chorus. He has taught on the faculties of Cornell University, Ithaca College, Colgate University, and Keuka College as performer, musicologist, and theorist. 

A frequent soloist, accompanist, and lecturer at Bach programs and festivals in the northeast, he has been a three-year fellow of the Bach Aria Festival at Stony Brook. Bill holds a Ph.D. from Cornell for a dissertation on the cantatas of J. S. Bach and has held a Fulbright Fellowship in England. He authored numerous articles in the New Harvard Dictionary of Music and the Harvard Biographical Dictionary of Musicians (1996). He co-edited The Compleat Mozart with Neal Zaslaw (Norton, 1990).
