Join the Youth Orchestra of the Southern Finger Lakes
Youth Orchestra Eligibility
Advanced elementary, middle school and high school students who play string, wind, or percussion instruments may audition to join the Youth Orchestra for fall semester 2025. We recommend that students play at an advanced NYSSMA Level 3 or higher.
Students should be capable of playing in keys with up to three flats and three sharps. Beginning shifting is a must. (Those not familiar with NYSSMA ratings should e-mail info@osfl.org for information.)
Rehearsals are Sundays at 4:30-6:30 PM in Horseheads beginning September 14, 2025.

In-person auditions will be scheduled in the spring, fall and at other times as needed. Students should prepare their choice of a 2-minute solo selection (without accompaniment) and a scale that demonstrates their range and skill level on their instrument. After submitting an application form and fee, students will be assigned audition times. If an in-person audition is not possible, students should prepare an audition video recording.

The season lasts from September to mid-May, and includes weekly Sunday afternoon rehearsals in Horseheads, NY.

There are two public concerts, in the fall and spring. The youth ensembles also perform a special side-by-side performance at the OSFL concert in March. Additionally, there are several concerts at senior living centers to spread the holiday cheer each December.

Yes! With approval from the conductors and the OSFL office, students may apply and begin at any time during the year. Contact the office for mid-season auditions.

Youth Orchestra Tuition
Tuition for the 2025-26 full year is just $240, considerably lower than other youth orchestra programs in New York state.
After you have applied and auditioned successfully, you will be invited to join the Youth Orchestra. Your tuition is due at that time but no later than the second rehearsal.
