Side-by-Side Concert

Experience what happens when the next generation of musicians meets the music of entirely new worlds in a concert that brings together young talent, symphonic favorites, and unforgettable music from film, anime, and video games.

Musicians from the Youth Orchestra of the Southern Finger Lakes take the stage before joining the professional musicians of the OSFL for a powerful side-by-side performance of Saint-Saëns' monumental Symphony No. 3, the "Organ Symphony" — best recognized from the beloved film Babe. Followed by the extraordinary young talent of Timothy Suen, the 2026 Hertzog Young Artist Competition winner performing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3.

After intermission, the concert takes a turn into worlds both familiar and fantastical. Liszt's exhilarating Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 launches a musical journey through some of today's most beloved stories, with the OSFL bringing the music of legendary Japanese composer Joe Hisaishi to life through selections from Princess Mononoke, Kiki's Delivery Service, Howl's Moving Castle and My Neighbor Totoro.

The adventure continues beyond the big screen with music from Dragon Quest XI, The Legend of Zelda and Attack on Titan — proving that the sound of a symphony orchestra can be just as at home in the worlds of anime and video games as it is in the concert hall.

From Beethoven and Saint-Saëns to Hisaishi and Zelda, this concert celebrates where orchestral music has been, where it's going, and the young musicians who will carry it forward.

Meet the Soloist

Timothy Suen, piano
Timothy Suen is the 2026 Doreen B. Hertzog Concerto & Aria Competition winner and a junior at Webster Thomas High School. He began studying piano with his mother and has been a student of Dr. E-Na Song at the Hochstein School since sixth grade.

In 2026, Timothy received the Rochester Philharmonic League’s Mildred and Julius Ness Award for Piano and earned Second Prize in the Penfield Symphony Orchestra’s Jo Amish Concerto Competition. He was also the winner of the Hochstein School Merit Scholarship Competition in 2025. As an active collaborative musician, he performs with a scholarship chamber ensemble, accompanies choirs, and plays piano in school band. In addition to piano, Timothy plays percussion in his school’s wind ensemble and has been selected twice for New York State Area All-State Ensembles.

Outside of music, Timothy is involved in Model United Nations and Tri-M Music Honor Society and serves as president of both Masterminds and Science Olympiad at Webster Thomas High School. He is also a member of the school’s track and swimming teams. In his free time, he enjoys reading, studying languages, and trying new foods.
