Who is Eligible to Audition?
Youth Orchestra (YO) - String, woodwind, brass, and percussion musicians of high school or extremely advanced middle school age who play an orchestral instrument are welcome to audition. We recommend that Youth Orchestra musicians play at approximately NYSSMA Level 5 or higher. Students should be prepared to play a solo selection, without accompaniment, and scales. Sight reading will also be included. Trumpet and French horn players may be asked to transpose.
Youth Orchestra Scale Requirements by Instrument Violin - All major scales, 2 octaves 1st violin - G, A, B-flat, C major in 3 octaves, spiccato (4 bounces per note) Viola and Cello - C, D, and E-flat in 3 octaves, all other major scales in 2 octaves String Bass - Scales E, F, G, A-Flat, A, B-Flat, B and C. Brass - All Major scales, 2 octaves Double Reeds - All major scales, 2 octaves Flute and Clarinet - All major scales, 2 octaves, and at least one scale in 3 octaves Junior String Ensemble (JSE) - Advanced elementary, middle school, and younger high school students who play a string instrument are welcome to audition. We recommend that students play at approximately an advanced NYSSMA Level 3-4. Students should be capable of playing in keys with up to three flats and three sharps. Beginning shifting is a must. (Those not familiar with NYSSMA ratings should e-mail info@osfl.org for information.) Students should be prepared to play a solo selection, without accompaniment, and scales. Sight reading will also be included. FAQs What should I expect at the audition? Each audition will last approximately ten minutes. Be ready early, and please be patient if auditions are running behind schedule. Both Youth Orchestra and Junior String Ensemble applicants will be asked to play scales and a solo selection of his or her choice, without an accompanist.
