For a unique experience this year, the Youth Orchestra and Junior String Ensemble have combined to create the Young People's Orchestra of the Southern Finger Lakes (YPO). Conducted by Margaret Matthews and Gary Chollet, the YPO offers extra workshop and community performance opportunities. For more information download the YPO trifold brochure or contact the office.
The Youth Orchestra of the Southern Finger Lakes, sponsored by the Orchestra of the Southern Finger Lakes and conducted by OSFL musicians Margaret Matthews (violin) and Gary Chollet (violin), is an ensemble of some of the finest young musicians in our region. The Youth Orchestra offers an opportunity for our talented local youth to grow as musicians and make friends that share similar interests. Being involved in this program is a great learning experience that many students say helped them to have a true appreciation for working with a group, as well as music in general.
High school or extremely advanced middle school string, woodwind, brass, and percussion players are welcome in the Youth Orchestra. Students are drawn from communities throughout the region, including: Horseheads, Corning, Elmira, Ithaca, Wellsboro, and beyond. |
The OSFL also sponsors the Junior String Ensemble, encouraging the development of young string players. It provides a training opportunity for young musicians to eventually join the Youth Orchestra of the Southern Finger Lakes.
Advanced elementary, middle school, and younger high school string students are welcome in the Junior String Ensemble. Students are drawn from communities throughout the region, including: Horseheads, Corning, Elmira, and beyond. Youth Orchestra and Junior String Ensemble Members:
